Strategies in Corporate and Govt..

Strategies in Corporate and Govt..

The future plans are made through Business Strategies in Corporate while Govt takes a policy decision to move ahead in a certain direction on an issue.

The Corporate usually is involved in its own line of business and has a larger picture as part of business strategy for future. Say next 10years could be an average term of the plans they make. They tend to drive the business in that line. The strength, direction and motivation for such a plan comes from - urge to compete and stand first. The support they seek is innovation, challenge areas to deliver what has not been delivered yet in the market.

While for Govt, though the structure is well equipped with relevant ministries and departments, it is Prime Minister or Cabinet steering the Govt. So, the focus of such small group is largely on certain targets which are relatively short term. Agenda for next year or two. The term of the Govt also limits such long term planning. Moreover, the status of various issues the country is facing presently, demands immediate resolution. There is not enough scope to drive towards future planning. Present gets the priority. This way of working can harm in long term.

Coming to another difference, why Govt is less efficient than Corporate? Even if we consider, policy/strategy making is done at higher levels either for long/short term, it is ground level employees performance that makes a lot of difference.

The striking differences are:
Time line based delivery, target oriented approach.
           Accountability
           Stream lined processing
commitment derived from incentives provided , competitive world, or lack of insecurity for non-performance.
Empowerment of employee in terms of connectivity to work(computers, laptop), work place comforts, other finance institutions access(banks, credit cards), Knowledge of the employee about work, sense of pride(big corporate world or foreign client etc)
The focus is customer centered. In Govt, Citizen is hardly cared for...

Assessment, promotions, short duration of projects - for couple of years, Change of roles, completion of project make a difference in work style. In Govt, employee knows it is largely going to be same work. After working for xyears based on seniority he would be promoted rather than on meritocracy. This is a serious drawback..

There are exceptions in both the  cases, but majority define the type of work... so... i leave this with the hope that, Govt would also one day bring efficiency in work by adopting some of corporate work styles.
